Nigeria strolled past Mexico 2-1 to reach the last eight of the 2026 FIFA
U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Striker, Oluebube Umejiaku and midfielder, Mary Dustan were on the score sheet for the Flamingos in their high profile win against the North Americans.
The encounter was a cagey one with both sides fighting to control the encounter with the array of young talents on display.
Forward, Umejiaku’s blistering pace came to play for Nigeria in the 40th minute as she powered home a ruthless strike to give the Flamingos the lead.
Despite Mexico trying to provide an instant response, only a goal separated both sides to the half time break.
Nigeria dominated proceedings in the second half while they pegged Mexico to their own half.
The Flamingos failed to utilize their possession in the final third which prompted head coach, Hakeem Busari to make some introductions into the game which further changed the dynamic of the encounter.
Left back, Rodiat Yusuf swinged in a dangerous cross which caused troubles for the Mexicans defense and Dunstan lashed onto a free ball in the box to rifle home Nigeria’s second goal of the game.
Mexico pulled a goal back towards the end of regulation time but it wasn’t enough to rescue them from elimination in the competition.
