African last team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco suffered its first defeat since 2025 after going down 2-0 to France in the quarterfinal in Boston on Thursday, 9th July.

The loss brought to an end the team’s 34-game unbeaten run, the sixth-longest such streak in international football.

Mohamed Ouahbi’s side remained unbeaten through the group stage, drawing with Brazil and posting wins over Scotland and Haiti.

The Atlas Lions staved off Netherlands in the round of 32 after a penalty shootout before posting a comfortable win over Canada in the pre-quarterfinal.

Italy holds the record with 37 consecutive games without defeat between 2018 and 2021.

Meanwhile, France became the first team to book its place in the semifinals as it aims to make a third successive title-decider.

Second half goals by Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele fired France to a 2-0 win over Morocco in the power packed encounter.

It was deja vu for Morocco as it fell to the same scoreline against France in the 2022 semifinals.

After a goalless first half, Mbappe curled in a superb effort to break Morocco’s dogged defence in the 60th minute.

The goal took the French skipper level with Argentina skipper Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race with eight goals.
