Real Madrid skillful forward Vinícius Júnior scored a fine equalizing goal to earn Brazil a draw with Morocco as both teams began their World Cup campaigns 1-1 on Saturday at MetLife Stadium.

Ismael Saibari opened the scoring for Morocco in the 21st minute with a delightful lobbed finish over Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

But Vinícius leveled 11 minutes later, cutting in from the left side of the penalty area before unleashing a shot into the top corner of the net.

The game ended 1-1 at half time, with both teams coming into the second stanza with the hope of scoring but there were many stoppages due to hard tackles as the players attempted to turn the table.

After the break, with Fabinho replacing Casemiro (as well as Danilo coming on for Ibañez), Brazil improved a little, but clear-cut chances remained scarce just as Morocco could not find the desired goal to win.

The result leaves the group finely balanced ahead of Haiti’s meeting with Scotland later on Saturday in the other group fixture.

For Morocco, semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup, the performance offered further evidence they can challenge the game’s traditional powers.

However, the ⁠Carlo Ancelotti-led Brazil were left with questions to answer after a disjointed display where they were repeatedly stretched by their opponents’ pace and movement.

Brazil will next take on Haiti, while Scotland are next up for Morocco.
